Britsburgh celebrates 60 years of BBC TWO with a substantial tea and presentation at The Fabled Table.
BBC TWO went on the air in April 1964 with the mission “to broadcast programs of depth and substance” in contrast to the more mainstream BBC channel or anything broadcast on commercial television. At its launch, BBC TWO was technically ahead of the existing stations in the UK at the time, broadcasting on a higher resolution 625 lines UHF system instead of the standard 405 line VHF system. In July 1967 BBC2 became the first British TV channel to regularly broadcast in colour, with the switch coinciding with that year's Wimbledon tennis tournament.
Over the years, BBC TWO drama productions, such as "The Six Wives of Henry VIII", "Elizabeth R" and "I, Claudius" were broadcast around the world. Science, art and history were explored as well, in Kenneth Clark's "Civilisation", Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent of Man" and James Burke's "Connections". The early years of BBC TWO were heavily influenced by David Attenborough, who served as the channel's controller from 1965-1969.
Britsburgh Board member Steve Shandor will explore the history of BBC TWO with a multimedia presentation. In addition he will attempt to look to the future, wondering, as The Daily Telegraph did this past April: “BBC TWO is 60 — but it may not reach 70”.
Britsburgh's celebration of BBC TWO will also be a "Tea", a substantial meal, at The Fabled Table, 1400 Buena Vista Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. FREE PARKING is available from 5:30 p.m. in the nearby lot located at 1400 Brighton Road (across from Rite Aid).
TICKETS: Britsburgh members receive a discounted price of $50.00; Non-members $70.00.
Note: Tables are a maximum of 6 people. If you have a group who wish to be seated together, either complete one registration or email events@britsburgh.com with the names of your guests. Thank you!
