A Right Royal Afternoon Tea (Wear Your Hat!) - 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION!
Highlighting Benjamin Henry Latrobe
Britsburgh is 10! The Festival traditionally starts HERE, as is our tradition with an Afternoon Tea at Mansions of Fifth on Labor Day!
Mansions on Fifth is one of the few remaining industrialist estates on Shadyside's legendary Millionaire's Row! After dainty sandwiches, HOME MADE SCONES (new this year!) and a cup of tea, we will explore Pittsburgh's connections to Benjamin Henry Latrobe. BRITSBURGH CELEBRATES 10 YEARS!!: We'll also enjoy some special birthday cake as Britsburgh celebrates its 10th anniversary!
Britsburgh Board member Kim Szczypinski will give a talk about Benjamin Henry Latrobe, a renowned 18th-19th Anglo-American neoclassical architect. Born near Leeds, Yorkshire in 1764, Latrobe was raised in the Fulneck Moravian religious community but chose to leave to pursue a career in architecture and later emigrated to the United States. America’s first professionally trained architect, Latrobe became known as the “Father of American Architecture;” his designs include the Baltimore Basilica; the now demolished Bank of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; and, in Washington, DC, the United States Capitol, the Latrobe Gate of the Washington Navy Yard, St. John's Episcopal Church, Decatur House and the White House porticoes, as well as a number of private homes. He had a significant Pittsburgh connection as well, which will be explored in the talk.
We hope you'll join us for what should be a very memorable 10th Anniversary Afternoon Tea!
